Language acquisition flourishes in children when they reach 15-18 months of age. From a stage of understanding sounds, they eventually progress to relate sounds to language.
Unlike other languages, English is composed of various components. It comprises grammar and vocabulary including alphabet, syllables, phonetics, pronunciation, vowels, consonants, parts of speech, spellings comprehension, letter writing, and more.
Dependent Factors that impact child’s English learning:
Medium– Medium such as books, audio, video, etc. are teaching aids that act as major contributors used in the process of teaching English, influencing their language skills and making learning interesting and impactful.
Environment– It is important to provide a learner-friendly environment free from all distractions that deviate their attention from focus while learning. Make them comfortable. Let them be willing to learn without pressuring them.
People– Children observe, listen and learn from the people around them. Therefore it is important to be mindful of our communication and make it useful for children’s English vocabulary.
Motivation– Encourage your children to improve English by providing them with resources that will help improve English. Example: Suggesting correct usage of English in daily conversations, enrolling them in English public speaking classes or English vocabulary classes according to their level of learning, encouraging reading and copywriting, etc.
Emphasizing the Elements of English –Learning put into practice makes it effective. As much as possible try to incorporate English in daily activities. You can ask them questions which enables them to think and apply their learnings practically. You can also devote separate time for learning through activity depending on your free time.
Read English –Several English books are available online or in stationery shops as per age limit to help reading habits. Give them reading materials and encourage reading daily, be it a paragraph or a story. This develops a child’s reading skills as well as language skills.
Speak English –Allow them to frame sentences on their own. This can be done through activity. Make them stand in front of the mirror and pronounce difficult words in the lesson. Guide them intensely by paying attention to those areas where they find it hard such as grammar use or pronunciation. Besides, you can enroll them in public speaking classes.
Write English –You can give them copywriting books to practice writing English daily. It improves their handwriting. Give them any paragraph from the reader or newspaper or any English book to copy. Encourage them to self-learn by picking up new words from what they listen to, either from others or audiobooks or music or any video. Provide them with a personal pocket dictionary which they can refer, to anything they come across and learn its meaning.
Practice makes one perfect. Make English learning part of routine life. Help your children, to gain confidence in English speaking and writing. While correcting their mistakes don’t interrupt in between, instead allow them to complete and then you can make them realize their mistake and then correct it. Thus, make English learning enjoyable yet impactful for children.
