Creative writing is among the most sought-after skills in the 21st century. It is a blend of several skills like creativity, perseverance and vocabulary, grammar and writing abilities. These talents manifest themselves in masterpieces like stories blogs, comic strips, blogs captions, slogans and captions discussions, books reviews and many more. Inviting youngsters to write a story or blog by themselves, can give them huge confidence boosts, and assist them in consolidating their literacy skills by applying their grammar, phonics, and reading abilities into practice.

What is Creative Writing?

Creative writing refers to any type of writing that goes beyond the boundaries of technical or professional literature. The boundaries of writing that are creative are limitless as you utilize your imagination to determine the words you write. Writing that is creative goes beyond just the process of forming a sentence one following another. It’s about weaving the story or message in a way that leaves a lasting impression on the audience. This is accomplished by using literary devices and tropes to create writing that is compelling and be able to grab the attention of readers.

Although there are many types of writing that could be written but there are four kinds of writing namely expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative. Each of these writing styles has its own distinct goal, and they each require different writing abilities. When we read writing that is creative is able to open our eyes to new perspectives, lead us on a journey to other worlds, and offer a deeper understanding of the world around us via words.

There are a variety of writing abilities we should teach to our kids, as listed below:

  1. Creative Writing
To ignite imagination, ignite interest and create stories, it is the ideal method of writing to help children get started. The children can start with simple sentences, and then gradually expand to stories and paragraphs based on their development and level of comfort. This is not just a boost to their phonics, grammar and reading skills , but increases their confidence.

    Exercises to be done:

    a. Get their imaginations ablaze by asking students for a story about their favourite idea and what their future might look like.

    b. Re-imagine a well-loved tale of their preferred choice. The story could come from a fairy-tale or any other tale that has touched them.

  2. Narrative Writing
A well-written story that includes characters with plot, story, drama and the climax, infused with plenty of imagination can be a boon especially for young children. They also learn organized thinking, reasoning, learning about situations through stories and let them develop emotional intelligence and life skills like empathy , and many more.

    Exercises that are recommended:

    a. Learn to teach them how to write interesting opening lines for the story

    b. Create a conflict that will be fought between the main character and the antagonist

    c. Then, you can transform into a spectacular high point

    d. They must have a conclusion or an end of their own choice

  3. Persuasive Writing
A well-organized summary that is based on logic and reasoning is the most common way to write effective persuasive writing. It’s a type of opinion that is based on this kind of style. It is based on emotion and reasoning, as well as analysis, critical thinking based on the plot, a balanced view and an end.

    Exercises that are recommended:

    a. Children can be divided into groups and provide examples of this style of writing.

    b. Encourage them to select an issue and then describe the reason they chose to come up with an opinion. Instruct them to support their decision with argument.

  4. Writing formal
Typically formal writing follows the rules of a specific set of rules as well as the format in which the writing work is framed. Examples of this are letters, school circulars formulating newsletters, and business communications for children older than.

These are the types of writing abilities that can help develop strong writing skills in young children.

The process takes time as well as consistent efforts to improve and refine writing abilities. Young learners need to be encouraged to continue exploring, reading and pondering the world around them. This is the key to developing great writing skills in young children. In CGR International School, we strive to encourage and develop the ability of writing to be creative of children as well as increase their overall self-confidence.
